According to sleep experts, the best sleeping position is on your side. Side sleeping has numerous benefits, including reduced back pain, improved breathing, and better digestion.

However, side sleepers often experience shoulder pain and lower back pain if their mattress is unsupportive or uncomfortable. The type of mattress you sleep on directly affects how much support and comfort you get each night.

If you’re a side sleeper, it’s important to choose a mattress that will provide you with the support and comfort you need to get a good night’s sleep. Otherwise, you may find yourself waking up with pain in your shoulders or lower back.

As a chiropractor, I have found that side sleepers need a mattress that is firm enough to support their hips and shoulders but soft enough to contour to their curves. A mattress that is too soft will cause the hips and shoulders to sink too deeply, which can lead to pain in the lower back and hips. A mattress that is too firm will not contour to the body and can also cause pain, particularly in the shoulder area.

Ideal Mattress Firmness

The best mattress firmness for side sleepers is therefore medium-firm. This provides the necessary support while still being comfortable. Mattresses with pressure relief or comfort layers are often ideal for side sleepers as they provide additional cushioning and contouring.

Ultimately, it is important to find a mattress that feels comfortable and provides the necessary support in order to avoid pain while sleeping on your side.

And if the memory foam is too firm, it can cause the shoulders to ache. For these reasons, I generally don’t recommend memory foam for side sleepers as a chiropractor.

However, it’s ultimately up to each individual to find the type of mattress that works best for them. There are many different types of mattresses on the market, so there’s sure to be one that’s perfect for you.

Are Pillow Top Mattresses Good for Side Sleepers?

As a chiropractor, I do not recommend pillow-top mattresses for side sleepers. Side sleepers need their shoulders to sink into their mattress so their spines are aligned.

Pillow tops often don’t allow your shoulder to sink deep enough or as deep as you would on a foam mattress. You want your spine to be in alignment when you sleep so you don’t wake up with neck or back pain.

I have seen many patients who come in with neck and back pain and they attribute it to their pillow top mattress. If you are a side sleeper, I recommend a foam mattress or a mattress with a very thin pillow top.

Do Hotels Use Soft or Firm Mattresses?
